Flat Feet 02:55
I stayed away today until I couldn’t stay I knew by the close of day I’d be back like a trapdoor stowaway Inside I made the case for a delay of an actual face-to-face I’m waitin’ just in case they close the place, a taste and chase Along a dark and gritty street There’s her part of town Better keep your blue eyes to your feet Flat feet on the ground I followed her apace straight down to the home of the runaways She looked behind and I looked away into the entry of a shady pay-per-day I thought I heard her say, “Come on along if you’re comin’ anyway” Flat feet are in the way, blue eyes betray the break of day Along a dark and gritty street There’s her part of town Better keep your blue eyes to your feet Flat feet on the ground

Old Guitar 02:59
In a house on a hill with a rise above the river And the dogs out back diggin’ up some bones from who knows when Sittin’ on the drive with the window down, an old Mercedes Benz Age wears you in like a fine glass o’ wine on a late September Old guitar Never got too far Strummin’ on them heartstrings Like you always are In a door downstairs to a room below the cellar With a hum up top driftin’ like some song from who knows when Sippin’ on your wine from a paper cup, ain’t no Chardonnay Age wears you in like a fine glass o’ wine on a late September (day) Old guitar Never got too far Strummin’ on them heartstrings Like you always are Strum, strummin’ that old guitar Nobody knows who you are Strummin’ that old guitar Nobody knows who you are

You and Ben Franklin Certain that you’re always in the right You’re up at sunrise But when you gonna see the light? You wake up early risin’ at the dawn while I’m deep in dreamin’ How we gonna get along? I like the night life That’s when we all get to play I’m up at midnight Just me and Dylan’s “Peggy Day” You wake up early risin’ at the dawn while I’m deep in dreamin’ How we gonna get along?

1 and 3 and 5 and 7 days that make a week Now it’s time to close the door and turn the key to sleep Cause your mind is wanderin’ To find someone who’s longing For the moonshine in your eyes Just like the verses to a song we used to know 1 and 3 and 5 and 7 sail the seven seas Overnight through broken harbors where you lost your keys Cause your mind is wanderin’ To find someone who’s longing For the moonshine in your eyes Just like the verses to a song we used to know Whoa whoa cause your mind is wanderin’ To find someone who’s longin’ For the moonshine in your eyes Just like the verses to a song we used to know

about

THE-SHAPE-WE'RE-IN was produced by musical legend, Levon Helm, in the summer of 2006. After hearing "Verses To A Song", an old-time lullaby written by bandleader, Reuben Chess, Helm invited the young songwriter, and his Brooklyn band, Quintus, up to jam in his Woodstock barn. The band ended up recording a weeks worth of live material, all under the wing of Helm.

In his own words Helm says, "Quintus is one of my favorite new bands. The boys play with a respect for each other I've not seen in such a young band before. Like they've been playin' together for years."

Nonetheless, halfway through the recording sessions, creative differences with the the band's then record label, Downtown Records, overtook, the EP was shelved, and the songs were never officially released.

QUINTUS has chosen to independently stream the rough mixes here.

"From the jaunty lead-off track, 'Orienta,' to the rollicking 'Old Guitar,' to the honky-tonker 'Night Owl,' to the country-tinged lullaby 'Verses-to-a-Song' (on which Helm plays mandolin), the EP brims over with youthful energy."
